Welcome to 1st Chard Wheelers Website
1st Chard Wheelers is a community cycling club with its origins date back to circa 1957 when a handful of local riders got together to ride and race. The original club existed for around ten years and disbanded in the late 60’s.
The club re-emerged with new blood in 1975 when local lads, Paul Barrett and Rex Facey reignited interest, and this became the nucleus of today’s Wheelers, although we are fast approaching 100 members, you will find us a friendly club. The club’s primary objective is a focus on members enjoying their cycling. Club members participate in all aspects of road cycling, from social club rides, European marathons in the Alps and Pyrenees and on to competitive cycle racing in all its guises. The club places great emphasis on developing youth riders. Our youth coaches have had great success over recent years and in 2016 one of our lads has been enrolled in the British Cycling development squad.
Whilst in excess of 80% of our club members are social riders, who ride for enjoyment and the fitness benefits that cycling offers. We also pride ourselves on being a great resource for anyone who wants to take a step up in their cycling, to either ride in a faster group, or to start riding competitively. The Wheelers has had a guiding hand in the development of a number of high class road racers, many of whom started within in the club’s youth group.
Our objective is to encourage new riders to take their first steps into cycling. The club is especially keen to develop ladies cycling within the local area. So, if you currently spend time in the local gym on Spin Bikes, why not enjoy the fresh air, see the local area from a different prospective and meet new people? Oh, and get fitter in the process…
