1st Chard Wheelers has a strong racing tradition, and is actively involved in road, track, time trials and cyclo cross, with members competing in all disciplines from youth riders through to veterans, making sure the clubs colours are to the fore in local races and even national events.
The club has members who have achieved national and regional honours. Wiebke Rietz won her age category at the 2015 National Hill Climb Championships. Over recent years the clubs youth section has flourished and we have assisted in the development of many young riders. In 2015 Joe West was selected for the prestigious Olympic Development Apprentice programme, a feat matched by Will Tidball for 2015. Also in 2015 Rowan Ellis became the Under 14 South West Circuit Race Champion and followed that up by wining the track league at Newport International Velodrome.
In recent years Jacob Board was National Inter Regional Time Trial Champion in 2013 and Emily Attfield won a round of the National Youth Circuit Series in 2014. While leading youth and junior rider Rob Hogg remains a valued member of the club.
Club members in the past have included Milk Race legend Roy Hopkins. Paul Barratt carried the clubs fortunes through the eighties, being part of a 1st Chard team that won the GHS Time Trial Championship in the late 70s. While in more recent times up and coming professional Tom Baylis and his brother Seb both began their cycling careers in 1st Chard.
